Thanks for the note, Thalia. Not sure if you meant your question rhetorically, but it is something that I ponder quite a bit, especially as I seek to consciously raise my children differently. I think part of it has to do with the competitive nature of limited opportunities for our parents generation, and the continued idea of “one and only,” which is still prevalent in most rooms. This caused them / causes us to ignore the milestones and only celebrate the achievement *if* it’s 100%. After all, we have to beat out all the other “pale – male – stale” candidates for even a single chance, amirite?
